Dundas FC’s tireless midfielder/forward/magazine writer Chris Shulgan has written a new book documenting his struggles with alcohol and crack cocaine while becoming a father. It’s called Superdad. And there is a launch party at Wrongbar tomorrow evening.

Dundas Football Club pal Philippe Blanchard will present his latest prints animated with coloured light this Friday, Oct. 1 at Angell Gallery (12 Ossington Avenue). This exhibit is programmed as part of the city-wide Printopolis print symposium.

The imagery—a maze-like network of abstract interconnected shapes and tangled cables—reflects Blanchard’s interest in animation and electric light (related to the human facination with fire in pieces like Quest for Fire and Cave Rave ), exploring the intimate relationship between motion, power, electricity and time. LAN Party goes in a new direction by working with pattern and considering the emergence of networks so complex they suggest a sort of technological sublime, something seemingly beyond human understanding.

The title of the piece refers to a phenomenon in the gaming and computer subculture whereby a large group of people temporarily gather and connect their equipment together to engage in multi-player games, forming a ‘local area network’ (LAN).

As Dundas FC’s home field has become more and more mashed up as a result of the ruthless exploits of the Toronto Eagles youth soccer club, we have been forced to explore other possibilities for a location for our Saturday morning training sessions.

It seems artificial turf is an ideal surface and we have located a unique spot called the Canoe Landing Park.

Canoe Landing Park is an eight-hectare urban park in downtown Toronto adjacent to the Gardiner Expressway and the Rogers Centre that received its name on November 2009.

The Park was designed by Landscape Architects Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg of Vancouver in collaboration with Landscape Architects, The Planning Partnership of Toronto and Douglas Coupland. The park incorporates art pieces by Douglas Coupland: a canoe large enough for people to stand in and see over the Gardiner to Lake Ontario, a colourful display of large fishing bobbers, and a one-mile run called the Terry Fox Miracle Mile.

We will meet there this Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10:30-12:30 a.m. to assess the viability of moving full-time to this location. Please bring cleats and turf shoes and a ball if you have one. Please see map below for location. The field is outlined in red, click to enlarge.

Arthur Antunes Coimbra, born 3 March 1953 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is better known as Zico.

Often called the “White Pelé”, he is commonly considered one of the most skilled dribblers and finishers ever and possibly the world’s best player of the early ’80s. He was also known as one of history’s greatest free kick specialists, able to bend the ball with pace and accuracy as well as having an extremely powerful shot. According to Pelé, generally considered the best footballer ever, “throughout the years, the one player that came closest to me was Zico”.

Zico scored 52 goals in 72 international matches for Brazil, and represented them in the 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cups. They did not win any of those tournaments, even though the 1982 squad is considered one of the greatest Brazilian national squads ever. Zico is often considered one of the best players in football history not to have been on a World Cup winning squad. He was chosen as the 1983 Player of the Year.

All games Canada play from here on in contribute to the potential of our national team qualifying for Brazil in 2014. Canada’s winless streak of seven games has lead to a slide in the FIFA rankings to position # 101. If this does not change it will continue to harm Canada’s status within CONCACAF. The unnecessary inclusion into a group of death come qualifying, for example, could be an unsavoury repercussion.
