Toronto — Dundas Football Club begins preparations for this Saturday’s Athletes for Africa Charity Sport Series Rock The Pitch Soccer Tournament with an evening training session tonight at their Gladstone Ave. training centre. A 12-person Dundas FC squad will take to Lamport Stadium, in the heart of Parkdale, on Saturday to compete against 19 other teams in an effort to raise money for war-affected youth in northern Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and southern Sudan.
“It’s obviously a great cause and we’re happy to be a part of it,” captain Colin Smith said today. “I like the way the team is shaping up and we’ve got a good chance of doing well here. Our scouts have been looking at our competition and we’ll be coming up against some good teams and some good players. We’ll have to give at least 112 per cent.”
Those players include former Canadian internationals Jim Brennan and Jason De Vos, NHLer Steve Montador and former Much Music VJs Master T and Rick The Temp.
Smith announced his 12-person lineup last night and it features a couple of Dundas FC newcomers:
Peter “Mad Max” Maddox
Mark “Shinpads” Chow
Asha “Still In School” Gupta
Chris “Still Skateboarding” Shulgan
Jeff “The Deception” Concepcion
Faisal “On Target” Mahdi
Mason “The Right Stuff” Wright
Sean “The Scowl” Smyth
Leah “Lady Luck” Wesolowski
Dwight “Woodbine” Ireland
Nima “The Curls” Nasoody
Captain Smith also urged supporters to come out and watch the tournament this Saturday. Games begin at 10:30 a.m. and will run until about 5 p.m. at which point the party will start at the ever-popular Parkdale watering hole Shoeless Joe’s. To sponsor the team, or a specific player, you can go here to donate. As of press time, Dundas Football Club was a mere $22 away from its goal of $3,000.
